ALMIGHTY [Baker's Evangelical Dictionary of Biblical Theology]

from God, Names of
El Shaddai. To Abraham God appears as God Almighty, El Shaddai (Gen 17:1). The designation "Shaddai," which some think is the oldest of the divine names in the Bible, occurs forty-eight times, thirty-one of which are in Job.

The traditional rendering "God Almighty" is debated. A consensus of sorts holds that "shaddai" is to be traced, not to the Hebrew, but to an Accadian word that means "mountain" so that the expression produces a meaning like, "'El, the One of the mountains." If so, El Shaddai highlights God's invincible power.

Or, the name may point to his symbolic dwelling. The juxtaposition of El Shaddai and El 'Elyon (Num 24:16; Psalm 91:1) may suggest that El Shaddai is a God who is chief in the heavenly council, whose residence was sometimes broadly associated with mountains (Hab 3:3).

Shaddai - ALMIGHTY [Easton Bible Dictionary]

Ammishaddai- People of the Almighty, the father of Ahiezer, who was chief of the Danites at the time of the Exodus (Numbers 1:12; 2:25). This is one of the few names compounded with the name of God, Shaddai, "Almighty."

Zurishaddai - Rock of the Almighty, the father of Shelumiel, who was chief of the tribe of Simeon when Israel was encamped at Sinai (Numbers 1:6; 2:12).

ALMIGHTY [Holman Bible Dictionary]

Title of God, translating Hebrew El Shaddai. The early Greek translation introduced Almighty as one of several translations. Recent study has tended to see “The Mountain One” as the most likely original meaning. The name was particularly related to Abraham and the patriarchs ( Genesis 17:1; Genesis 28:3; Genesis 35:11; Genesis 49:25). God gave Moses the name Yahweh, which to an extent replaced El Shaddai (Exodus 6:3). Job is the only book to use El Shaddai extensively, 31 times in all. Paul used Almighty once at the end of a series of Old Testament quotations to imitate Old Testament style and to underline divine power to bring His word to fulfillment. Revelation refers to God nine times as “Almighty,” again giving a feeling of power to the vision of Revelation.

Shaddai - ALMIGHTY [Smith Bible Dictionary]

Shad’da-i

(the Mighty), an ancient name of God, rendered "Almighty" everywhere in the Authorized Version, is found in connection with el, "God," El Shaddai being then rendered "God Almighty." By the name or in the character of El-Shaddai God was known to the patriarchs, (Genesis 17:1; 28:3; 43:14; 48:3; 40:25) before the name Jehovah, in its full significance, was revealed. (Exodus 6:3) [also see GOD]

ALMIGHTY, Shaddai, Shadday [ISBE]

ol-mit'-i:
(1) (shaddai (Genesis 17:1)): Found in the Old Testament forty-eight times, most of these in the Book of Job; it occurs either alone or in combination with 'el, "God"). The root meaning is uncertain.
(2) (pantokrator), the exclusive translation of this Greek word in the New Testament, found principally in Rev (nine times), once besides (2 Corinthians 6:18). Its occurrence in the Apocrypha is frequent.
See GOD, 2 , NAMES OF GOD (2) Attributive:
To distinguish the God of Israel as supreme from others of the class 'Elohim, certain qualifying appellations are often added. 'El `Elyon designates the God of Israel as the highest, the most high, among the 'Elohim (Genesis 14:18-20); so do Yahweh `Elyon (Psalms 7:17) and `Elyon alone, often in Psalms and in Isaiah 14:14.

'El Shadday, or Shadday alone, is a similar term which on the strength of some tradition is translated "God Almighty"; but its derivation and meaning are quite unknown. According to Exodus 6:3 it was the usual name for God in patriarchal times, but other traditions in the Pentateuch seem to have no knowledge of this....
