This week our reading starts with the Jews' 25th year of exile in Babylonia with Ezekiel prophesying to Jews there until about 573/2 BC when, after encouraging the Jews to consider their unique relationship with God, Ezekiel died in the land of exile.

By next Friday, we will have read through the last Babylonian Empire king, Belshazzar, and several Persian Empire kings Darius the Mede, Cyrus the Great, and on through to Darius the Great, with the prophets Haggai and Zechariah getting messages for encouraging Israel to return not just to Jerusalem, but more importantly to their God. Some decided not to start over again back in Judah, but as we'll see in coming days, God's improved relationship with the people of Israel carried over to those remaining in the Persian Empire - like Queen Esther.

This week's readings include psalms and proverbs collected after Hezekiah's reign, Manasseh's reign when his father's revival wasn't continued, the young Josiah's reign with Habakkuk, Zephaniah, and Jeremiah prophesying what God was showing them. If the people didn't turn to God and away from their own ideas of right and wrong, they would be led off to exile soon, punished instead of disciplined. The 3 prophets above begged the people and the kings to listen, come back to God, and obey Him. The false prophets said to trust that God would never destroy His people and His temple, no matter what.

God bless our listening and new understanding. God bless us with repentance. God bless our hearing and obedience of His word.
